General Information About Mauritius

The people of Mauritius are multiethnic, multicultural and multilingual. The island's government is closely modelled on the Westminster parliamentary system, and Mauritius is highly ranked for democracy and for economic and political freedom. The Human Development Index of Mauritius is the highest in Africa. Mauritius is a welfare state, the government provides free universal healthcare, education up to tertiary level for all its citizens and free public transport for students, senior citizens and the disabled. Along with the other Mascarene Islands, Mauritius is known for its varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island. The island was the only known home of the dodo, which, along with several other avian species, was made extinct by human activities relatively shortly after the island's settlement.

The maximum speed for kids is set to 30 km/h and the maximum speed for adults is 60 km/h. Religious festivals

Different religious festivals occur at different period of the year due to various religious beliefs.
  • Chinese Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)

    Spring Festival is the celebration of Chinese New Year in January or February, with the traditional Chinese Dragon and Lion Dances and loads of Firecrackers according to tradition to drive away the evil spirits .
 
  • Thaipoosam Cavadee

    This religious festival is celebrated mostly by people of Tamil origin. All around Mauritius, the rituals are performed in temples which are known as kovils. The streets are filled with devotees carrying flower covered wooden arches and pots of milk. Some have a small spear through their tongue, or through the cheeks.
 
  • Maha Shivaratree

    The Maha Shivaratree is celebrated every year in honor of the Lord Shiva. It is a festival, during which thousands of Hindus pilgrimage to Grand Bassin. All pilgrims are dressed in white and carry Kanwars on their shoulders,structures made of bamboo and paper. Once the people reach the lake, they say their prayers and make offerings. At last the pilgrims collect sacred water from the Ganga Talao and take it back to their homes to pour it over their own statues of Shiva.
 
  • Eid-ul-Fitr

    Eid-ul-Fitr is a celebration that happens after a month of fasting and dedication in faith for muslims. Ramadan is a month of sacrifice and spirituality. During Ramadan, muslims observe certain restraints as they fast. From dawn till dusk, they cannot eat or drink anything and are also not allowed to smoke. Eid-ul-Fitr is seen as a day to reconnect with old friends and family members.
 
  • Christmas

    Christmas with its traditional Christmas tree and gifts is celebrated by the Mauritian population, irrespective of community. Santa Claus can often be seen in many commercial centres and public spaces. Christmas is the time of sharing joy and happiness.
 
  • Ougadi

    Ougadi marks the new beginning of a new year where Telugu people celebrate the festival with great pomp gatherings of the family following a sumptuous feast. The day, nevertheless, begins with ritual followed by prayers.
 
  • Gudi Padwa

    People of Marathi faith also celebrates their new year, Gudi Padwa.
Culture in the island has been influenced by the different heritages of the people. This is reflected through the music, food, literature that has had diverse influences which have developed into a Mauritian culture  

History

Mauritius officially the Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. The main Island of Mauritius is located about 2,000 off the southeast coast of the African continent. The Republic of Mauritius includes the islands of RodriguesAgalega and St. Brandon. The capital and largest city Port Louis is located on the main island of Mauritius. In 1598, the Dutch took possession of the Mauritius. They abandoned Mauritius in 1710 and the French took control of the island in 1715, renaming it the Isle de France. France officially ceded Mauritius including all its dependencies to the UK through the Treaty of Paris, signed on 30 May 1814 and Reunion was returned to France. The British colony of Mauritius consisted of the main island of Mauritius along with Rodrigues, Agalega, St Brandon,
